Greenprint has been selected by Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) to lead a green schoolyards pilot program across Chicago’s suburbs. Our team is currently working with four schools — Morton East High School, Burnham Elementary School, Graves Dual Language School & Heritage Middle School, and East Leyden High School — to design green schoolyards that maximize each school’s stormwater management capabilities and provide students and staff with various co-benefits.

To ensure the final designs are tailored to the individual needs of each school, our staff prepared design workbooks for students to identify areas on their playgrounds that are prone to flooding and indicate where they would like more green space. Students completed their workbooks after a Greenprint-led presentation about green infrastructure and combined sewer systems. Our team also held open discussions with teachers and parents from each school to answer questions, get a better understanding of current site issues, and learn about the improvements they hope to see.
