Greenprint was selected by Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) to lead the Fresh Coast Green Schoolyards program for suburban schools within its service area. Our team led the outreach process and selected seven schools to participate in the program, centering equity as a key criteria: Willow Glen Primary School, Deer Creek Intermediate School, St. Francis High School, Horace Mann Elementary School, General Mitchell Elementary School, Shorewood High School, and Glen Hills Middle School.

Our team collaborated with school leadership at every step of their projects, from co-designing their green infrastructure plans to helping them apply for construction funding. Students engaged by voting on the plants and pollinators that they hoped to see in their schoolyards, and by learning about green infrastructure and combined sewers through Greenprint-developed educational videos.

The designs not only maximized stormwater management capabilities, but also improved site-use so students and staff could better engage with nature through features such as outdoor classrooms and sensory gardens. In total, 18 acres of green space were added across the schoolyards, contributing to MMSD’s 2035 vision.
