Greenprint is partnering with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) to plan, build and maintain green infrastructure on public and private properties through the Fresh Coast Green Communities (FCGC) program. The program aims to reduce sewer overflows and limit polluted runoff entering local waterways by managing 9–12 million gallons of water during storms through green infrastructure.
In some parts of Milwaukee, stormwater and wastewater flow through the same pipes to be cleaned before being released into local waterways. But during heavy rain, too much water can overwhelm the system. To keep it from backing up into homes and basements, MMSD may release the extra water into nearby rivers or lakes through overflow pipes.
FCGC uses green infrastructure to capture and clean stormwater, reducing pressure on the sewer system and creating more green space throughout the county. In doing so, it encourages the creation of more Fresh Coast Guardians — individuals committed to protecting Milwaukee's water through sustainable practices and green infrastructure. Greenprint manages every step of FCGC’s green infrastructure projects including funding, design, and construction. We will also help participants apply for available stormwater credits and will manage the vegetation establishment of green infrastructure for the first five years following construction.
